Crossbow Ridge lies within the disputed borderlands that have been fought over by Blackwood and Bracken since the Age of Heroes. The ridge is one of several landmarks—along with Woodhedge, Buckle, and the Teats—that have changed hands repeatedly as the two houses have warred, made peace, and warred again. The land was claimed by Lord Jonos Bracken as part of his ancestral domains, which he asserted had been stolen from his house by the Blackwoods.

Role in the Post-War Settlement

After the War of the Five Kings, when Jaime Lannister came to Raventree Hall to accept Lord Tytos Blackwood's surrender, the disposition of these contested lands became a key point of negotiation. Lord Bracken presented Jaime with a detailed map showing all the lands he claimed, including Crossbow Ridge, insisting that Lord Tywin Lannister had promised to restore them. Jaime, acting as the king's representative, forced Lord Blackwood to cede several territories as punishment for his rebellion. When asked which lands he would consent to part with, Tytos Blackwood offered Woodhedge, Crossbow Ridge, and Buckle—a collection Jaime dismissed as "a ruin, a ridge, and a few hovels." The ridge was thus one of the first and least significant concessions Blackwood made, a token sacrifice compared to the more valuable Lord's Mill and the village of Honeytree that he was later compelled to surrender.
